Why does one knit?

Posted by Miss Knotty on December 9, 2005

What an interesting question. Here is one woman’s reason, from the latest issue of knitty:

She knits out grief at the loss of her baby.

This article made me cry a little bit. And then it made me think. A lot. Dangerous thing, thinking.

I do this. I knit out loneliness, loss, love, desire, apathy, anger, and ennui. I knit in prayer, I knit whilst thinking. I knit for pleasure, I knit while in pain (I knitted after I jammed my left middle finger badly at a church retreat – owie). I knit to ameliorate any number of unpleasant feelings, and to take joy in the pleasant ones. I knit. I love to knit. I could never knit if I thought it would bring obligation with it. But only to give and share the love I feel, the pain I feel. I knit because I am human. I knit because I feel, and I often knit as I feel.
